Now that Jojo is in such a good place medically, we've been on a mission lately to show him more of the world around him.
It wasn't that long ago that our daily life was a whirlwind of hospital stays, recovery from surgeries, outpatient appointments, and WAY too many sleepless nights at home. We're all getting significantly better rest these days (although that will change soon with a new baby in the house!), so I finally have the energy to have some real fun with my goofy little guy.
He loves to be outside, meet new people, and explore, especially now that he's fully mobile!
The severity of his medical conditions also means that we can't take this stability for granted. I feel a big responsibility to take full advantage of this period of calm to give him as good of a life as we possibly can, since we know how quickly things can change for kids with his diagnoses.
Fortunately, we live in a part of the Bay Area that offers a lot to see and do without having to go very far from home... and the traffic isn't as bad up here, either.
That being said, there's some practical limitations we have to work with. Budget is a big one, as is the length of time Jojo will readily tolerate being in a stroller or car seat, so I tend to stay within about a 30 minute radius (walking or driving) from home.
I started bookmarking all of the local spots on my Google Maps app that fall within that distance that I want us to visit or re-visit, and it's become quite a formidable list. Bonus points go to places that are free and/or on this side of the Carquinez Bridge... those bridge tolls add up.
Since I think it makes it more fun to give things an official name, I'm dubbing this our #30MinuteRadius Project. I'll be using that tag on Instagram, if you'd like to follow along, in addition to blogging about our little trips here, of course.
Or, better yet, join us and start your own 30 Minute Radius Project to show off your favorite local places. Just be sure to use the #30MinuteRadius tag so we can link up!
